South African mountain biking has reason to celebrate after the Paris Olympics, where Alan Hatherly and Candice Lill delivered performances that will be remembered for years to come.

Alan Hatherly achieved a groundbreaking milestone by securing South Africa's first-ever Olympic medal in cross-country mountain biking. On Monday, Hatherly captured the bronze medal at the challenging Elancourt Hill course, finishing just 11 seconds behind gold medalist Tom Pidcock of Great Britain and silver medalist Victor Koretzky of France. This historic result not only highlights Hatherly’s remarkable skill but also marks a significant achievement for African mountain biking on the Olympic stage.

Hatherly reflected on his achievement, saying, “Securing an Olympic medal has always been a dream, and to accomplish that today is truly surreal. Being the first African to win a medal in this event makes this moment even more special.” His success is a continuation of an outstanding season, where he also leads the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup XCO series and triumphed at the Les Gets World Cup.

Candice Lill offered a display of incredible resilience during her Olympic XCO race on Sunday. After a strong start, Lill’s race was dramatically interrupted when her rear wheel shattered midway through the second lap. Forced to navigate the course on foot to the tech zone for a replacement, her chances for a top finish seemed slim. However, Lill’s determination shone through as she swiftly rejoined the race, demonstrating both grit and focus despite the setback.

Despite the significant time lost, Lill powered through to finish an impressive 20th place among the world’s elite riders. The gold medal was claimed by Pauline Ferrand-Prévot of France, with Hayley Batten of the USA securing silver and Jenny Rissveds of Sweden rounding out the podium.
