Joburg is about to host a super scenic and safe ultra trail run in Steyn City

On 12 July 2025, the enormous and beautifully designed lifestyle estate of Steyn City will host the launch edition of the Steyn City Ultra Trail Run.

Created with the vision of becoming Johannesburg’s premier trail running event, this inaugural race promises a fantastic experience for everyone — from elite athletes to adventurous joggers. Speed walkers are welcome too.

Set against the backdrop of Steyn City’s award-winning 2,000-acre indigenous parkland, the event offers three distances to cater to every runner:

● 7.5KM – A short and sharp scenic route, ideal for newcomers, families, and speed enthusiasts.

● 21KM – A challenging half-marathon with flowing singletrack and spectacular views.

● 53KM Ultra – The ultimate endurance test, featuring lush landscapes, river crossings, and iconic landmarks including the Steyn City Golf Course, the Jukskei River, and striking outdoor artworks.

Judging by our previous experience on the estate — racing mountain bikes and off-road triathlons — participants can look forward to a professionally organised event.

This event was born out of a passion to offer a premium trail running experience right in the heart of Johannesburg. Steyn City, one of South Africa’s most beautiful lifestyle estates, provides the ideal, picture-perfect backdrop — giving runners the opportunity to explore its pristine trails, man-made creeks, and natural beauty on foot, all within a safe and welcoming setting.

This premium event takes place right on the doorstep of local runners, who will enjoy access to breathtaking scenery on custom-designed trails dotted with outdoor art installations, children's play nodes, manicured singletrack, an 18-hole golf course, and a vibrant race village.

Entry includes a high-quality race pack featuring 2XU gear, exciting prizes from Retail Insight powered by Telkom at Dainfern Square, a styled medal, pre-event training runs, and more.

It’s not just a securely gated estate — the event has also partnered with a professional medical team, stationed at the race village and key points along the course. With the entire 53 km route contained within the secure boundaries of Steyn City, medical teams will have rapid and direct access to all areas of the trail. Each water point will be fully staffed and well-stocked, positioned on average every 5 km, and powered by 32Gi nutrition and supplements, ensuring runners stay fuelled, hydrated, and supported throughout their journey.

Entries are capped at 400 runners across all three distances to ensure a smooth, premium launch race experience.

The goal of the event is to offer a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone. The trails are fast, flowing, and accessible — ideal for families, road runners trying trail for the first time, or seasoned race snakes chasing records. The 53 km Ultra is designed for experienced runners looking for a fast and rewarding challenge, while the 21 km suits those building up to longer distances. The 7.5 km is ideal for beginners, weekend warriors, and families wanting to enjoy the trail in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
