Skechers Are Back!

When we first received a test pair of Aero Burst, the name suggested that Skechers were targeting the next generation of shoe design evolution with a more aerodynamic construction to reduce air resistance. Naturally, we were curious about how noticeable aerodynamics could be built into a running shoe. After testing, it’s apparent that the Aero Burst doesn’t actually "cut through the wind” in the literal sense - like an aero helmet or bike frame might - but rather achieves a smoother, more efficient ride through its streamlined transitions, responsive foam, and the added forefoot snap from its inserted H-plate. These elements work together to minimise energy loss and create a more fluid, forward-propelling stride.

Straight out of the box, the Skechers Aero Burst grabbed our attention with its bold, energetic design and stack height of 42mm - 36mm to provide serious max cushioning. The vibrant colorways and striking details reflect a playful, unconventional aesthetic - marking a confident return for sneaker brand Skechers in the performance running game. You won't easily hide in a crowd wearing these.

The next thing that caught our eyes were the shark tooth looking flex grooves cut into the cushioning of the midsole. These are not just a funky design element, but rather play a functional role in the performance of the shoe. The main purpose of these flex grooves is to enhance forefoot flexibility, allowing the shoe to engage naturally with your stride and provide a smoother, more efficient toe-off. They help the midsole compress and rebound more effectively, contributing to the shoe’s responsive feel. Additionally, although marginally, these cutouts reduce overall weight by eliminating material, without sacrificing cushioning or structure. The result is a more agile and lively ride.

Deeper down is where we find some concealed magic. Skechers have taken a fresh approach combining a carbon-infused outsole with Ultra Flight cushioning. These elements work together to create a lightweight, responsive ride without relying on a traditional carbon plate. Instead of inserting a  rigid plate, Skechers blends a carbon infused H-plate into the outsole, adding subtle snap, improved durability, and reduced weight. Unlike a traditional full-length plate that runs as a single curved or flat piece through the midsole, an H-plate - shaped like the letter “H” - features two lateral arms along the foot’s edges connected by a horizontal bar across the forefoot. This design delivers enhanced toe-off propulsion and flex with a more natural, forgiving feel underfoot. The result is a more connected and adaptable ride that transitions well from easy to higher tempo efforts, adding versatility to a wider range of speed seekers. The Ultra Flight midsole complements this with its low-profile cushioning underfoot - offering energy return without the bulk or softness of higher stack foams. While it wasn’t designed to be an all out speed shoe, the snappy feel from the Ultra Flight foam gave us confidence to pick up the pace during strides and shorter tempo runs. A good balance of agility and efficiency for everyday training.

Another thing that intrigued us was the Goodyear rubber outsole. Developed in partnership with the iconic tire brand, Goodyear, this rubber compound is designed to deliver excellent grip on both dry and wet surfaces, giving the shoe reliable road-holding capability. It also significantly improves outsole longevity, meaning the Aero Burst maintains its performance over more miles with less wear. Despite its toughness, the Goodyear rubber remains flexible, allowing for smooth transitions and natural foot movement without adding bulk or stiffness to the ride.

The Aero Burst features a generously padded upper that gives it the feel of a plush, cushioned trainer. Made from double-layer engineered mesh, it offers moderate breathability but would probably be better suited to cooler conditions due to the added padding. Though the forefoot and toe box run fairly narrow for a typically wider south african foot - it didn't create any discomfort or hotspots, nor make my foot feel restricted. The padded, semi-gusseted tongue stays in place well, providing a solid lockdown - and reflective details on the toe box and “S” logo add some extra personality.

Skechers may not be the first brand you think of when it comes to technical running shoes, but the bouncy Aero Burst makes a strong case for those seeking a livelier shoe at an entry level price point. For beginners looking for a comfortable, entry-level daily trainer or more experienced runners wanting a lightweight snappy option for easy days, it’s a solid choice at R2699

Final Thoughts

The Skechers Aero Burst is an edgy looking, versatile, lightweight trainer that does the basics right. It’s comfortable, breathable, and light on the foot with enough snap for casual pick-ups. While ths shoe won’t suit those seeking maximal plated propulsion nor longer distance support & stability, it is a surprisingly capable option for everyday miles, shorter efforts, and a neutral runner that's looking for a bit of everything when it comes to affordable cushioning, comfort and efficiency.
