Here’s where the race shifts gears - literally! From calm rythm in the water to whirring cassettes and riders vying to hang onto strong packs.
The super scenic bike leg at the Cape Town Triathlon runs along the Atlantic coastline between Granger Bay and Bantry Bay with closed roads and open ocean vistas, though you’ll likely be concentrating too hard to whale watch.
It’s flat & fast - here’s your chance to fly! You’ll start with easy gears up the short climb from transition then start to build momentum as your legs take over. Sip a sports drink then take stock & start your strategy.
The event follows a draft-legal format which means riders are allowed to sit in the slipstream of the athletes ahead. This changes the dynamic completely compared to traditional time-trial triathlons and instead of riding alone against the clock, athletes often form packs and share the workload which helps you maintain higher speeds together and run on fresher legs.
Positioning becomes critical! Riding within a pack can save significant energy but it also demands focus and good bike handling. Small gaps close quickly and corners require smooth braking before accelerating out of corners. Staying aware of the riders around you is essential. Smooth pedalling and efficient cadence help conserve energy especially when the pace surges out of turns or along straighter sections of road. Will you hold on, decide to drop them or drop off? - the choice is yours.
While the temptation is to push hard on the bike, experienced triathletes know that this leg is about balance. Riding efficiently rather than all-out often sets up a much stronger run later in the race. Hydration also matters here. Even during shorter races regular sips of fluid on the bike help maintain hydration & energy to prevent fatiguing early.
And while the pace might be intense, the surroundings are hard to ignore. To one side the Atlantic stretches endlessly toward the horizon while above the city rises the unmistakable silhouette of Table Mountain.
The bike leg is fast and tactical and full of exciting energy, it’s where your race will really begin to take shape. Smart decisions can make all the difference before the run.
As you head to transition 2 after 2 laps or 4, take a moment to sit up and stretch, spinning lighter gears as you prepare to dismount just outside the Greenpoint park entrance.
This could be your fastest 5k ever 🥳🏃🏽♂️💨
