James McCallum is the new SA Duathlon Champ

We’re excited to see James flying our SA colours on the biggest stage in Zofingen Switzerland in September.

We caught up with him to ask about his race day experience, as a triathlete racing his first duathlon, here's what James McCallum had to say.

"It was a fantastic weekend of racing at the SA Duathlon Champs which was held in KZN at the Midmar Damn. The event was superbly organised and everything ran very smoothly, thanks to KZN tri and Triathlonplus for making this happen.

The run course for the Long Distance event, which I was taking part in, was 3 loops of 5km totalling 15km then 6 loops of a 10km bike course totalling 60km, then another one lap of the run course of 5km.

I have not raced at midmar before and was surprised as to how hilly the run and bike courses were, this made for some tough and honest racing.

The first run of 15km went well for me and managed to find a good rhythm and execute it how I had wanted to.

Onto the bike course the legs took a little while to get going but came through as the ride went on which enabled me to then push a bit more to the back end of the bike.

Getting off the bike for the last run of 5km I didnt really know how I would be feeling as duathlon is not something I have ever done before but was pleasantly surprised as I was feeling pretty good and managed to enjoy the last run leg and secure the win.

It is an event I can highly recommend and a great way to mix things up a bit for people focusing on triathlon."

Well done James, we're excited to see you race in September.
